Meet the Eyes & Periorbital Aesthetics Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who performs eyelid and periorbital surgery here and who is responsible for the medical content. The other three physicians contribute what an assessment of the eye area often needs: the center’s surgical standards and its experience of revision, the assessment of the skin around the eye and of the device options that act on it, and the dermatologic treatment of a lid that is irritated or infected before any plan is made.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Eyelid and periorbital surgery · lid position and support as separate findings · revision of an eye area that has not settled

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the examination that decides which structure is producing the complaint. He measures the lid edge and how much of the coloured part of the eye it covers, tests how completely the lids close, looks at the surface of the eye before anything is planned, and examines the support of the lower lid before discussing either lid. He will say when a hollow is better filled than operated on, when a hood is better watched than removed, and when an eye that has already been operated on should be left alone for a while rather than revised immediately.

Clinical focus

  • Assigning an eye complaint to skin, muscle, fat, fluid, position or surface
  • Lid position and closure measured before any operation is offered
  • Upper and lower lid surgery planned around the tear film and lid support
  • Repair of a lid edge that sits low, where muscle function allows it
  • Revision of an eye area that has not settled after earlier surgery

The surface of the eye comes first

Most people arrive with a photograph and a named operation. The assessment is not a negotiation about the operation. It establishes which structure is producing the complaint and whether the eye is comfortable and closing completely, because those two answers decide what may safely be offered. The plan that follows is sometimes smaller than expected, sometimes not an operation at all, and occasionally a decision to wait.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Center leadership · surgical standards and complex revision

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part is the standard any operation on the eye area has to meet and the backstop behind it, including the assessment of an eye that has been operated on before and has not settled as expected.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin and laser aesthetics · the skin around the eye

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Within this site her part is the skin in front of everything else: its quality and thickness, the pigmentation that shadows this area, and the device options that improve texture and contract skin modestly, together with the limit that none of them removes a hood of skin.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · skin problems on the lids and around the eye

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Within this site his part is the skin condition rather than the shape: the irritation, eczema, infection and reactions to a previous product that settle on the lids, and that need treating in their own right before anything elective is planned.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with the structure, not the operation

An assessment measures lid position and how completely the lids close, and looks at the surface of the eye, before appearance is discussed. It establishes what each option would change and what each would leave exactly as it is, and it is reasonable to leave having decided against treatment.
